Mdu AKA TRP, the producer and DJ from Diepkloof, Johannisburg, South Africa, has been pointed out as an Amapiano genre figurehead. He is often credited with being behind the log drum sound that has become a mainstay of the genre. "Amapiano, a Nguni word loosely translated to "the pianos", is a subgenre of kwaito and house music that emerged in South Africa in the mid-2010s. It is a hybrid of deep house, jazz, and lounge music characterized by synths and wide, percussive basslines."
