Mosquito Coast

Mosquitia, historically known as the Mosquito Shore (or Coast), is the ancestral and continuing national territory of the Mosquitian people in eastern Central America. It comprises the coastal plains extending from the Aguán River in the northwest to the Chagres River in the southeast and westward to the Amerrisque and Talamanca Mountains, and encompasses the adjoining offshore cays, islands, and archipelagos within the Bay of Mosquitia. While often described as a geo-cultural region, Mosquitia is widely regarded by scholars and Mosquitian institutions as a distinct territorial entity, possessing a continuous legal, political, and historical identity. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, Mosquitia was governed by the Mosquitian monarchy. In 1861, the monarchy’s jurisdiction was confined to the Mosquito Reservation, an internationally sanctioned political entity established to preserve Mosquitian self-government. In 1894, however, this arrangement was unilaterally abolished, and the territory was militarily occupied by Nicaragua. Mosquitian representatives and scholars contend that the annexation occurred without lawful consent, constituting an ongoing occupation since 1894. Accordingly, they maintain that Mosquitia’s sovereignty remains in abeyance rather than extinguished, and that its current administration by surrounding states lacks legitimate title under international law.
