About José Manuel Aldana
José Manuel Aldana (Valladolid, 1730 - Mexico City, 1810), was a composer, violinist, harpsichordist and conductor from New Spain. He was the author of numerous religious works. In 1786 he began as a violinist in the orchestra of the Coliseo de México. His music was preserved in the Cathedral of Mexico and in the Church of Santa Rosa de Morelia. His style has a strong Haydn influence. He has a mass that was performed by Carlos Chávez in New York in 1940. He is considered one of the last great composers of the Viceroyalty period in Mexico.
