Γιώργος Μαύρος

About Γιώργος Μαύρος

Mavros - whose real name is Giorgis Saridakis - was born in 1910 at the village Skoutelona in Kissamos, Hania. He got his nickname Mavros, which literally means ‘black man’ in Greek, because he had dark skin. He started playing the violin when he was ten years old and at the age of fifteen he played at his first glenti (massive gatherings of people at the village square where food, wine, Cretan music and dancing are the protagonists). The period from 1935 to 1965 was his most productive one.
