About Downfall

“Downfall” is the fourth track to Noah Kahan’s fourth studio album, The Great Divide. It deals with missing somebody before they leave, but being happy that they are going. Despite, Kahan hints at having an underlying resentment toward them for leaving, as he roots for their plans for themselves to fail so they inevitably return to the town where Kahan lives. Kahan commented for Billboard that it would be fun to have Phoebe Bridgers be featured on a remix of the song. .

Downfall Lyrics

[00:12.05] Something 'bout the window seats got you feeling like a poet
[00:17.55] You said I think that we had everything and 'til now, just didn't know it
[00:23.42] I'm leaning towards a subject change in a sentimental moment
[00:28.64] We're driving through the
[00:29.77] Garden State, we'll be strangers in the morning
[00:34.76] The way you've got your hair up straight makes you look real Californian
[00:39.96] You know you never really could quite place when I'm angry and I'm joking
[00:45.70] I'm cursing every exit sign and my damn Christ-like devotion
[00:51.57] To hopin' you might change your mind, and to hating you for going
[00:56.00] Roadkill fawn, you said how sad
[00:58.49] Left to rot alone like that
[01:01.36] You state a feeling like a fact
[01:04.08] I'm glad you left, but you'll be back
[01:09.37] So call me when it goes to shit
[01:12.72] I'll be keeping the house the way it was
[01:17.02] I won't rub your face in it
[01:21.47] I swear I won't tell anyone
[01:25.66] I don't mind being your dead end
[01:29.54] I think it's fine to never move on
[01:34.06] Keep my ear up to the doorframe
[01:38.41] And I'll keep rooting for your downfall
[01:42.46] And I'll keep rooting for your downfall
[01:49.68] Call me when the bugs don't die and the spring looks just like autumn
[01:55.06] Oh tell me when you miss the climb from a hole that has no bottom
[02:00.65] I'm hoping that the view ain't nice, that the streetlights bleed into your bedroom
[02:06.13] That you open up to someone kind, and they hold it all against you
[02:10.94] Roadkill fawn, you said how sad
[02:13.31] Left to rot alone like that
[02:16.29] You state a feeling like a fact
[02:18.94] I'm glad you left, but you'll be back
[02:23.79] So call me when it goes to shit
[02:27.53] I'll be keeping the house the way it was
[02:31.58] I won't rub your face in it
[02:35.91] I swear I won't tell anyone
[02:40.16] I don't mind being your dead end
[02:44.45] I think it's fine to never move on
[02:48.76] Keep my ear up to the doorframe
[02:53.12] And I'll keep rooting for your downfall
[02:57.35] And I'll keep rooting for your downfall
[03:17.73] So call me when it goes to shit
[03:21.03] I'll be keeping the house the way it was
[03:25.55] I won't rub your face in it
[03:29.71] I swear I won't tell anyone
[03:33.81] I don't mind being your dead end
[03:38.02] I think it's fine to never move on
[03:42.43] Keep my ear up to the doorframe
[03:46.54] And I'll keep rooting for your downfall
[03:50.90] And I'll keep rooting for your downfall
[03:55.38]
