About Black

"Black" is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam. The song is the fifth track on the band's debut album, Ten (1991). Featuring lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music written by guitarist Stone Gossard, "Black" is a soliloquy by a broken-hearted man, who is remembering his absent lover. After Ten became a commercial success in 1992, Pearl Jam's record label Epic Records urged the group to release the song as a single. The band refused, citing the song's personal nature. .

Black Lyrics

[00:20.63] Hey, hey, yeah, uh
[00:23.87] Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
[00:34.17] Were laid spread out before me as her body once did
[00:44.98]
[00:49.05] All five horizons revolved around her soul, as the earth to the sun
[01:01.83] Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn, ooh
[01:13.95] Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
[01:24.44] Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
[01:36.30] And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
[01:44.36] Of what was everything
[01:47.47] Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black
[01:53.31] Tattooed everything
[01:56.98] I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play
[02:09.45] I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
[02:21.01] Oh and twisted thoughts that spin 'round my head
[02:31.53] I'm spinning, oh I'm spinning
[02:36.92] How quick the sun can drop away
[02:42.07] And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
[02:49.33]
[02:52.89] Of what was everything
[02:54.79] All the pictures have all been washed in black
[03:02.19] Tattooed everything
[03:05.52] All the love gone bad turned my world to black
[03:11.43] Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all that I'll be, yeah
[03:25.78] Oh, oh, ooh
[03:35.12]
[03:38.45] I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
[03:40.94] I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why
[03:50.60] Why, why can't it be, oh can't it be mine?
[03:55.29] Ooh, ah yeah, ah ooh
[04:03.78]
