The Town I Loved So Well

[00:52.62] where our school played ball by the gas yard wall

[01:11.65] Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane,
[01:21.02] past ther gaol (jail) and down behind the fountain,
[01:30.46] those were happy days in so many, many ways
[01:40.00] in the town I loved so well.
[01:49.99] In the early morning, the shirt factory horn
[01:58.65] callde women from Creggan, the moor and the bog
[02:08.88] while their men on the dole played a mother's role
[02:18.50] fed the children and then trained the dogs.
[02:27.95] And when times got tough, there was just about enough
[02:37.34] but they saw it through without complaining
[02:47.44] for deep inside was a burning pride
[02:56.84] in the town I loved so well
[03:06.34] There was music there in the Derry air
[03:16.18] like a language that we all could understand
[03:26.44] I remember the day when I earned my first pay
[03:35.51] when I played in a small pick-up band
[03:45.37] there I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
[03:55.52] I was sad to leave it all behind me
[04:05.12] for I learned about life and I found a wife
[04:15.14] in the town I loved so well

[05:04.46] But when I returned how my eyes have burned
[05:14.57] to see how a town could be brought to its knees
[05:24.39] by the armoured cars and the bombed out bars
[05:34.18] and the gas that hangs on to every breeze
[05:43.62] Now the army's installed by the old gas yard wall
[05:53.82] and the damded barbed wire gets higher and higher
[06:03.58] with their tanks and their guns oh my God what have they done
[06:13.38] to the town I loved so well
[06:23.00] Now the music's gone but they carry on
[06:33.20] for their spirit's been bruised, never broken
[06:43.56] they will not forget but their hearts are set
[06:53.13] on tomorrow and peace once again.
[07:03.06] For what's done is done and what's won is won
