"The State of Dreaming" is the sixth song on Marina's sophomore album Electra Heart (2012). In a track-by-track interview about Electra Heart, Marina said: "'The State of Dreaming' was inspired by Marilyn Monroe. She basically died in an undignified way. I supposed it’s connected perception and how people see this beautiful image of her and she was a troubled person, but that one image was strong enough to make people behave in certain way, do certain things." .
