In an interview with Clara Amfo for BBC Sounds Sam said they wanted “So Serious” to be “like a cute pop song” but “deep lyrically”. The story of Sam’s relationship break-up is searingly sad. Yet the result is like an ironic version of ‘If You’re Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands’. It is light and gentle with a catchy, dance-able rhythm, a singalong, disco-style pop song that stays in the mind. .
