About Cats in the Cradle
Cats in the Cradle is based on a poem written by his wife Sandy about her ex-husbands neglectful father. Sandy showed it to Harry as a warning when he was on the road too much and he made it into a song. The single topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. .
Cats in the Cradle Lyrics
[00:11.80] My child arrived just the other day
[00:14.85] He came to the world in the usual way
[00:18.11] But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
[00:21.57] He learned to walk while I was away
[00:24.41] And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
[00:27.26] He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
[00:31.18] You know I'm gonna be like you"
[00:35.19] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[00:38.97] Little boy blue and the man on the moon
[00:42.20] When you comin' home, Dad
[00:44.03] I don't know when, but we'll get together then
[00:48.31] You know we'll have a good time then
[01:00.41] My son turned ten just the other day
[01:03.38] He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
[01:06.20] Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
[01:09.25] I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok
[01:12.36] And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
[01:15.45] And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
[01:18.75] You know I'm gonna be like him"
[01:23.28] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[01:26.62] Little boy blue and the man on the moon
[01:29.42] When you comin' home, Dad
[01:31.23] I don't know when, but we'll get together then
[01:35.48] You know we'll have a good time then
[01:47.13] Well, he came from college just the other day
[01:49.90] So much like a man I just had to say
[01:53.02] "Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while"
[01:56.13] He shook his head and said with a smile
[01:59.28] "What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
[02:02.47] See you later, can I have them please"
[02:06.85] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[02:09.89] Little boy blue and the man on the moon
[02:13.03] When you comin' home son
[02:14.57] I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
[02:18.97] You know we'll have a good time then
[02:31.46] I've long since retired, my son's moved away
[02:34.53] I called him up just the other day
[02:37.85] I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
[02:41.64] He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
[02:46.10] You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
[02:49.06] But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
[02:52.17] It's been sure nice talking to you"
[02:56.61] And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
[03:00.08] He'd grown up just like me
[03:02.85] My boy was just like me
[03:07.41] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[03:11.03] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[03:14.21] When you comin' home son
[03:15.87] I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
[03:20.19] We're gonna have a good time then
[03:24.99]
[00:14.85] He came to the world in the usual way
