About She's Leaving Home

Paul McCartney talked about "She's Leaving Home" in a 1997 interview: "John and I wrote 'She's Leaving Home' together. It was my inspiration. We'd seen a story in the newspaper about a young girl who'd left home and not been found, there were a lot of those at the time, and that was enough to give us a story line. So I started to get the lyrics: she slips out and leaves a note and then the parents wake up ... It was rather poignant. I like it as a song .

She's Leaving Home Lyrics

[00:05.26] Wednesday morning at five o'clock
[00:09.66] As the day begins
[00:13.36]
[00:15.37] Silently closing her bedroom door
[00:20.96] Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
[00:25.97] She goes down the stairs to the kitchen
[00:30.33] Clutching her handkerchief
[00:35.99] Quietly turning the backdoor key
[00:42.34] Stepping outside, she is free
[00:46.66] She,... (we gave her most of our lives)
[00:52.75] Is leaving (sacrified most of our lives)
[00:58.08] Home (we gave her everything money could buy)
[01:05.46]
[01:13.64] Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
[01:21.56]
[01:24.62] Picks up the letter that's lying there
[01:30.14] Standing alone at the top of the stairs
[01:34.90] She breaks down and cries to her husband
[01:39.58] Daddy, our baby's gone.
[01:46.47] Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly?
[01:51.82] How could she do this to me?
[01:56.93] She (we never thought of ourselves)
[02:02.62] Is leaving (never a thought for ourselves)
[02:08.31] Home (we struggled hard all our lives to get by)
[02:14.59] She's leaving home, after living alone, for so many years
[02:21.51] Friday morning, at nine o'clock
[02:27.73] She is far away
[02:31.50]
[02:34.67] Waiting to keep the appointment she made
[02:39.25] Greeting a man from the Motortrade
[02:45.22] She (what did we do that was wrong)
[02:50.52] Is Having (we didn't know it was wrong)
[02:55.78] Fun (fun is the one thing that money can't buy)
[03:01.49] Something inside, that was always denied,
[03:06.60] For so many years,.
[03:12.33] She's leaving home
[03:16.09]
