About Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)

"Fooling Yourself" is the second single released from Styx's The Grand Illusion album. The song was written by guitarist Tommy Shaw. Shaw has said many time in interviews that "Fooling Yourself" was originally based on Shaw's initial perception of Styx keyboardist Dennis DeYoung — an "angry young man" who viewed the group's successes with a wary eye and grew angry or depressed with every setback. It was only in later years, Shaw noted, that he began to see himself in the lyrics, and the song took on a more personal meaning to him. .

Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) Lyrics

[00:00.02] You see the world through your cynical eyes
[01:41.91] You're a troubled young man I can tell
[01:47.45] You've got it all in the palm of your hand
[01:51.54] But your hand's wet with sweat and your head needs a rest
[01:56.38] And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it
[02:01.05] You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it
[02:06.39] Why must you be such an angry young man
[02:10.32] When your future looks quite bright to me
[02:15.68] And how can there be such a sinister plan
[02:19.73] That could hide such a lamb, such a caring young man
[02:24.28] And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it
[02:29.05] You're killing yourself if you don't believe it
[02:34.63] Get up (get up, get back on your feet
[02:38.47] You're the one they can't beat and you know it)
[02:42.17] Yeah, come on (come on, let's see what you've got
[02:47.75] Just take your best shot and don't blow it, whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
[03:44.56] And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it
[03:50.16] You're killing yourself if you don't believe it
[03:54.75] Get up (get up, get back on your feet
[03:59.46] You're the one they can't beat and you know it)
[04:02.82] Oh, come on (come on, let's see what you've got
[04:08.49] Just take your best shot and don't blow it, whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
[04:50.83]
