This, his last work for solo instrument, is Mozart at his most poised and elegant. In this lively first movement, after a bold statement of the main theme, we hear the clarinet in playful dialogue with the strings. The soloist restates the theme, embellishing it throughout the movement with imaginative moves up and down the scale, with the orchestra filling in the background. A final flourish, bringing soloist and orchestra together, returns to the opening and takes the movement to a satisfying close. .
