About Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K. 467: II. Andante

Mozart wrote and performed this concerto when he was at the height of his popularity in 1785. It is probably best known for its use in the 1960's film Elvira Madigan, and has been associated with it ever since. The slow movement of this concerto shows the subtlety of Mozart's art - on the surface a sublime exercise in quiet lyricism, it is far from being just a poetic idyll. The plucked strings in the bass lend an air of insistence, and sudden orchestral accents bring darker thoughts, casting shadows over the lyrical strings. .
