About Unknown / Nth

In “Unknown / Nth”, Hozier expresses themes of distance, betrayal, and the feeling of being unknown or misunderstood in a relationship. The track takes inspiration from Dante Alighieri’s, Divine Comedy, mainly from the 9th Circle of Hell which is known as the “Treachery circle, where those who have committed acts of betrayal are punished. The circle is divided into four regions, each punishing a different form of treachery, and sinners are trapped in ice .

Unknown / Nth Lyrics

[00:37.47] You know the distance never made a difference to me
[00:44.32] I swam a lake of fire, I'd have walked across the floor of any sea
[00:51.62] Ignored the vastness between all that can be seen
[00:57.37] And all that we believe
[01:00.36] So I thought you were like an angel to me
[01:12.54] Funny how true colours shine in darkness and in secrecy
[01:19.46] If there were scarlet flags, they washed out in the mind of me
[01:26.51] Where a blinding light shone on you every night
[01:32.16] And either side of my sleep
[01:35.18] Where you were held frozen like an angel to me
[01:44.36] It ain't the being alone (sha-la-la)
[01:51.25] It ain't the empty home, baby (sha-la-la)
[01:58.13] You know I'm good on my own (sha-la-la), sha-la-la, baby
[02:04.44] You know, it's more the being unknown
[02:09.70] So much of the living, love, is the being unknown
[02:21.78] You called me "angel" for the first time, my heart leapt from me
[02:28.94] You smile now, I can see its pieces still stuck in your teeth
[02:36.19] And what's left of it, I listen to it tick
[02:41.74] Every tedious beat going unknown as any angel to me
[02:53.48] Do you know, I could break beneath the weight
[02:58.91] Of the goodness, love, I still carry for you?
[03:07.36] That I'd walk so far just to take
[03:12.95] The injury of finally knowing you
[03:19.86] It ain't the being alone (sha-la-la)
[03:26.92] It ain't the empty home, baby (sha-la-la, sha-la-la, la-la-la)
[03:33.75] You know I'm good on my own (sha-la-la), sha-la-la, baby
[03:40.03] You know, it's more the being unknown
[03:45.42] And there are some people, love, who are better unknown
[03:50.44]
