About Walking In Memphis

"Walking in Memphis" is a song written and originally recorded by singer-songwriter Marc Cohn and released as a single in March 1991 by Atlantic Records. The song's lyrics are autobiographical. They chronicle a trip that Cohn, then a struggling songwriter and singer, took to Memphis to overcome a bout of writer's block. After visiting the church where former soul singer Al Green was preaching, Elvis Presley's former home of Graceland, and a small nightclub in nearby Mississippi, he returned to New York and began composing the song. .

Walking In Memphis Lyrics

[00:07.19] Put on my blue suede shoes
[00:11.44] And I boarded the plane
[00:13.58] Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
[00:16.92] In the middle of the pouring rain
[00:21.56] W.C. Handy
[00:25.76] Won't you look down over me
[00:28.71] Yeah, I got a first class ticket
[00:32.36] But I'm as blue as a boy can be
[00:34.55] Then I'm walking in Memphis
[00:38.14] Was walking with my feet, ten feet off of Beale
[00:42.79] Walking in Memphis
[00:46.65] But do I really feel the way I feel
[00:51.56]
[00:54.09] Saw the ghost of Elvis
[00:57.43] On Union Avenue
[01:00.24] Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
[01:03.38] Then I watched him walk right through
[01:07.25] Now security they did not see him
[01:10.34] They just hovered 'round his tomb
[01:14.53] But there's a pretty little thing, waiting for the king
[01:18.88] Down in the Jungle Room
[01:20.35] When I was walking in Memphis
[01:25.66] I was walking with my feet, ten feet off of Beale
[01:28.67] Walking in Memphis
[01:32.03] But do I really feel the way I feel
[01:36.59]
[01:42.21] They've got catfish on the table
[01:46.90]
[01:49.51] They've got gospel in the air
[01:56.34] And Reverend Green, be glad to see you
[02:01.86] When you haven't got a prayer
[02:07.93] Boy, you got a prayer in Memphis
[02:13.14]
[02:20.13] Now Muriel, plays piano
[02:22.63] Every Friday at the Hollywood
[02:27.22] And they brought me down to see her
[02:30.38] And they asked me if I would
[02:33.73] To do a little number
[02:36.94] And I sang with all my might
[02:40.84] She said, "Tell me are you a Christian child?"
[02:45.18] And I said, "Ma'am, I am tonight"
[02:47.25] Walking in Memphis (Walking in Memphis)
[02:51.99] I was walking with my feet, ten feet off of Beale
[02:54.65] Walking in Memphis (Walking in Memphis)
[02:58.40] But do I really feel the way I feel
[03:02.07] Walking in Memphis (Walking in Memphis)
[03:06.08] I was walking with my feet, ten feet off of Beale
[03:09.38] Walking in Memphis (Walking in Memphis)
[03:12.90] But do I really feel the way I feel
[03:17.61]
[03:24.24] Put on my blue suede shoes
[03:27.67] And I boarded the plane
[03:30.77] Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
[03:34.96] In the middle of the pouring rain
[03:38.72] Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
[03:42.65] In the middle of the pouring rain
[03:49.93]
