About Copperhead Road
The title song "Copperhead Road" tells of a Vietnam War veteran, scion of a rural moonshine bootlegging clan, who returns home to Johnson County, Tennessee (Copperhead road is an actual road near Mountain City, TN). The song also inspired a popular line dance timed to the beat of the song. The line "I learned a thing or two from ol' Charlie don't you know" reportedly refers to the Viet Cong ( = VC = Victor Charlie, normally referred to as "Charlie" .
Copperhead Road Lyrics
[00:39.95] Well, my name's John Lee Pettimore
[00:46.35] Same as my daddy and his daddy before
[00:52.55] You hardly ever saw grandaddy down here
[00:58.75] He only came to town about twice a year
[01:04.89] He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
[01:10.82] Everybody knew that he made moonshine
[01:17.22] Now the revenue man wanted frandaddy bad
[01:20.63] Headed up the holler with everything he had
[01:23.78] Before my time, but I've been told
[01:26.83] He never come back from Copperhead Road
[01:31.17]
[01:42.80] Now daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
[01:48.42] Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
[01:54.73] "Johnson County Sheriff" painted on the side
[02:00.58] Just shot a coat of primer, then he looked inside
[02:06.67] Well, him and my uncle tore that engine down
[02:13.16] I still remember that rumblin' sound
[02:19.19] And then the Sheriff came around in the middle of the night
[02:22.64] Heard mama crying, knew something wasn't right
[02:25.57] He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
[02:28.66] You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road
[02:32.98]
[02:37.55] Hey!
[02:43.43] Hey! Hey!
[02:47.03]
[03:03.95] I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
[03:09.54] They drafted the white trash first, around here anyway
[03:15.50] I done two tour's of duty in Vietnam
[03:21.06] I came home with a brand new plan
[03:27.17] I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
[03:33.21] I just plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
[03:38.88] And now the D.E.A's got a chopper in the air
[03:42.35] I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
[03:45.11] I learnt a thing or two from Charlie, don't you know
[03:48.03] You better stay away from Copperhead Road
[03:52.23]
[04:02.21] Copperhead Road
[04:07.67] Copperhead Road
[04:13.39] Ha! Copperhead Road
[04:15.37]
