“Renaissance” is the opening track on Eminem’s twelfth album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). The term “renaissance” originates from the Latin word Renaistre, which means “rebirth”. This concept symbolizes a thematic loop in the album, as it depicts Eminem/Slim Shady being lowered into his coffin in ”Somebody Save Me” after struggling to cope with addiction and overdosing in 2007. The first part of Eminem's verse was originally intended for the original version of "Antichrist" from 2005 .
