About Ventura Highway

"Ventura Highway" is a 1972 song by the band America from their album Homecoming, written by Dewey Bunnell. Dewey Bunnell, the song's vocalist and writer, has said that the lyric "alligator lizards in the air" in the song is a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky he saw in 1963 while his family was driving down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, California, where they had a flat tire. While his father changed the tire, he and his brother stood by the side of the road .

Ventura Highway Lyrics

[00:19.18] Chewin' on a piece of grass, walkin' down the road
[00:24.80]
[00:26.87] Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, Joe?
[00:33.29] Some people say this town don't look good in snow
[00:41.61] You don't care, I know
[00:47.60] Ventura Highway in the sunshine
[00:54.12] Where the days are longer
[00:56.89] The nights are stronger than moonshine
[01:00.56] You're gonna go, I know
[01:12.72] 'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
[01:16.63] And the days surround your daylight there
[01:20.75] Seasons crying no despair
[01:23.80] Alligator lizards in the air, in the air
[01:32.98]
[01:45.11] Wishin' on a falling star, waitin' for the early train
[01:50.92]
[01:53.34] Sorry boy, but I've been hit by a purple rain
[01:59.60] Aw, c'mon Joe, you can always change your name
[02:07.54] Thanks a lot son, just the same
[02:13.62] Ventura Highway in the sunshine
[02:20.27] Where the days are longer
[02:22.72] The nights are stronger than moonshine
[02:29.33] You're gonna go, I know
[02:33.96]
[02:38.72] 'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
[02:42.63] And the days surround your daylight there
[02:46.91] Seasons crying no despair
[02:50.64] Alligator lizards in the air, in the air
[02:57.10]
