About Cat's in the Cradle
Cats in the Cradle is based on a poem written by his wife Sandy about her ex-husbands neglectful father. Sandy showed it to Harry as a warning when he was on the road too much and he made it into a song. The single topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. .
Cat's in the Cradle Lyrics
[00:13.37] My child arrived just the other day
[00:15.85] He came to the world in the usual way
[00:19.10] But there were planes to catch and there were bills to pay
[00:22.18] He learned to walk while I was away
[00:25.36] And he was talking 'fore I knew it and as he grew
[00:28.75] He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad
[00:32.09] You know, I'm gonna be like you"
[00:36.95] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[00:39.66] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[00:42.70] "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when
[00:46.45] We'll get together then, son, you know we'll have a good time then"
[00:59.10] When my son turned ten just the other day
[01:04.17] Said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on and let's play
[01:07.35] Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today
[01:10.49] I got a lot to do" he said, "That's okay"
[01:13.54] And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
[01:16.69] Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
[01:19.87] You know, I'm gonna be like him"
[01:23.30] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[01:26.97] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[01:30.28] "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when
[01:33.59] We'll get together then, son, you know we'll have a good time then"
[01:48.42] Well, he came from college just the other day
[01:51.02] So much like a man I just had to say
[01:53.84] "Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
[01:57.19] He shook his head and he said with a smile
[02:00.07] "What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
[02:03.12] See you later
[02:04.97] Can I have them please?"
[02:07.87] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[02:10.64] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[02:13.37] "When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when
[02:17.14] But we'll get together then, dad, We're gonna have a good time then"
[02:38.52] Well, I've long since retired and my son's moved away
[02:41.49] Called him up just the other day
[02:44.46] I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
[02:48.77] He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time"
[02:53.57] "You see, my new job's a hassle and the kid's got the flu
[02:56.05] But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
[02:59.45] It's been sure nice talking to you"
[03:04.17] And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
[03:07.01] He'd grown up just like me
[03:10.09] My boy was just like me
[03:15.05] Yeah, and the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[03:17.75] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[03:21.03] "When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when
[03:24.58] But we'll get together then, dad, we're gonna have a good time then"
[03:34.53]
[00:15.85] He came to the world in the usual way
