About Put That Woman First

This is an ode to the importance of a woman in a relationship and the fact that she is meant to be loved and treated with respect. This jam is one of the 2000’s popular love ballads which made Jaheim popular in the RnB world. This same theme was originally set in a couple of songs including The Mad Lads' similar ode of "Penance to a Forgotten Lady" and a source of Rick Ross' sample as well as the William Bell single, "I Forgot to Be Your Lover" from which this song is sampled in instrumentation and part of the lyrics. .

Put That Woman First Lyrics

[00:00.46] Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh (yeah)
[00:24.48] If they gleam in the sun while they spin and they fit on my truck then (I could remember)
[00:30.27] And if it came in a sack, no stems, no seeds in the bag, then (I could remember)
[00:36.32] And if it dripped from my wrist and it looked like it shined light blue, then (I could remember)
[00:42.32] But, oh, girl, I forgot to be your lover
[00:48.67] If it wasn't for the nine-to-five, double up over time, yeah (I could remember)
[00:54.76] If it wasn't for the Sunday All-Star weekend game, girl (I could remember)
[01:00.64] And if it wasn't for the dough, getting fifty G's a show, girl, you know that (I could remember)
[01:06.86] But silly me, silly me, oh, tell me, how could I ever forget to be your lover?
[01:13.61] Now I realize that you need love too (oh, yeah)
[01:16.26] Spend my life makin' up to you
[01:19.48] Oh, girl
[01:21.36] Oh, I forgot to be your lover
[01:25.05] When she starts bringin' up old dirt
[01:28.13] And the fights keep getting worse (oh, brother)
[01:30.74] Findin' numbers in her purse
[01:34.20] Better put that woman first (yeah)
[01:37.28] And you notice she ain't wearin' her ring (oh, no)
[01:40.14] And she starts playin' little games
[01:43.49] Comin' in late from work
[01:46.23] You better put that woman first
[01:49.48] If it wasn't for the makeup on my shirt, still I'd be chasin' skirts then (I could remember)
[01:54.31] And if it wasn't for that fight last night and you smashin' out my headlights then (I could remember)
[02:01.56] If it wasn't for parole, steady duckin' my P.O., girl, you know (I could remember)
[02:07.55] But silly me, silly me, babe, tell me, how could I ever forget to be your lover?
[02:14.16] Now I realize that you need love too
[02:16.93] Spend my life makin' up to you
[02:20.35] Oh, girl
[02:22.13] Oh, I forgot to be your lover
[02:25.82] When she starts bringin' up old dirt (bringin' up old shit)
[02:29.14] And the fights keep getting worse (oh, oh, oh, oh)
[02:32.61] Findin' numbers in her purse (I'm tellin' you, brother)
[02:34.30] Better put that woman first (you better put your woman first)
[02:37.01] And you notice she ain't wearin' her ring (oh, yeah)
[02:40.93] And she starts playin' little games (I'm-I'm-I'm-I'm tellin' you, brother)
[02:44.53] Comin' in late from work
[02:46.99] You better put that woman first (put that woman first)
[02:50.38] So many times (actin' like it really wasn't nothin')
[02:53.47] So many ways (kept to myself, always runnin')
[02:56.45] So many games (all that I sin)
[02:59.40] So many words (I need you to stay)
[03:02.73] Always came first (even though sometimes felt like second)
[03:05.54] Came down to love (you know I had to learn a lesson)
[03:08.56] Spendin' some time (put in some work)
[03:10.59] And for better or worse (always put that woman first)
[03:14.68] When she starts bringin' up old dirt
[03:17.20] And the fights keep getting worse (gettin' worse)
[03:20.59] Findin' numbers in her purse (in her purse)
[03:23.66] Better put that woman first (put that woman first)
[03:26.64] And you notice she ain't wearin' her ring (ooh, yeah)
[03:29.49] And she starts playin' little games (her little games)
[03:32.89] Comin' in late from work (I'mma say it again)
[03:35.53] You better put that woman first (put that woman first)
[03:38.90] When she starts bringin' up old dirt
[03:41.86] And the fights keep getting worse (she's gonna leave you)
[03:45.89] Findin' numbers in her purse
[03:48.47] Better put that woman first (yeah, yeah, yeah)
[03:50.89] And you notice she ain't wearin' her ring (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
[03:53.94] And she starts playin' little games (yeah, yeah)
[03:57.10] Comin' in late from work
[03:59.91] You better put that woman first
