About Galaxy Song

The Galaxy Song is an upbeat if somewhat nihilistic song from the movie Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, later released on the album Monty Python Sings. The song appears about halfway through the movie, when Eric Idle climbs out of a refrigerator and begins singing. The lyrics include a number of astronomical facts, and (within the limits imposed by creative licence), the figures tend to be tolerably accurate. In scientist Paul Kohlmiller's analysis of the facts presented in The Galaxy Song .

Galaxy Song Lyrics

[00:01.28] Whenever life gets you down, Mrs Brown
[00:04.18] And things seem hard or tough
[00:07.85] And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
[00:12.74] And you feel that you've had quite enough
[00:21.59] Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
[00:27.44] And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
[00:31.01] It's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned
[00:35.40] A sun that is the source of all our power
[00:39.25] The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
[00:43.32] Are moving at a million miles a day
[00:46.72] In an outer spiral arm at forty thousand miles an hour
[00:51.14] Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way
[01:02.88] Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars
[01:07.04] It's a hundred thousand light years side to side
[01:10.88] It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light years thick
[01:14.64] But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide
[01:18.74] We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point
[01:22.69] We go round every two hundred million years
[01:26.49] And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
[01:30.35] In this amazing and expanding universe
[02:05.44] The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
[02:10.21] In all of the directions it can whizz
[02:14.14] As fast as it can go – the speed of light, you know
[02:17.96] Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is
[02:21.66] So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure
[02:25.96] How amazingly unlikely is your birth
[02:30.00] And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
[02:33.86] 'Cause there's bugger all down here on earth
[02:36.10]
