About Cat's in the Cradle
Cats in the Cradle is based on a poem written by his wife Sandy about her ex-husbands neglectful father. Sandy showed it to Harry as a warning when he was on the road too much and he made it into a song. The single topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. .
Cat's in the Cradle Lyrics
[00:10.43] My child arrived just the other day
[00:14.45] He came to the world in the usual way
[00:16.94] But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
[00:20.50] He learned to walk while I was away
[00:23.39] And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it
[00:25.90] And as he grew, he'd say
[00:27.56] "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
[00:30.36] You know I'm gonna be like you"
[00:34.33] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[00:38.04] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[00:41.24] "When you comin' home, Dad?"
[00:43.82] "I don't know when
[00:45.27] But we'll get together then
[00:48.48] You know we'll have a good time then"
[00:51.23]
[00:59.70] My son turned ten just the other day
[01:03.35] He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, c'mon let's play
[01:06.30] Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today
[01:09.28] I got a lot to do", he said, "That's okay"
[01:12.07] And he, he walked away but his smile
[01:15.18] Never dimmed and said
[01:15.97] "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
[01:18.73] You know I'm gonna be like him"
[01:22.30] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[01:25.94] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[01:28.91] "When you comin' home, Dad?
[01:30.72] "I don't know when
[01:32.03] But we'll get together then
[01:34.55] You know we'll have a good time then"
[01:37.85]
[01:45.34] Well, he came from college just the other day
[01:49.41] So much like a man, I just had to say
[01:52.36] "Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
[01:55.58] He shook his head, and he said with a smile
[01:58.47] "What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys"
[02:01.69] "See you later, can I have them please?"
[02:05.98] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[02:09.35] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[02:12.58] "When you comin' home, son?"
[02:14.45] "I don't know when
[02:15.43] But we'll get together then, Dad
[02:19.12] You know we'll have a good time then"
[02:22.19]
[02:37.19] I've long since retired, my son's moved away
[02:40.78] I called him up just the other day
[02:43.95] I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
[02:47.77] He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I could find the time"
[02:50.96] "You see, my new job's a hassle and the kid's got the flu"
[02:55.65] "But it's sure nice talkin' to you, Dad
[02:58.41] It's been sure nice talkin' to you"
[03:01.87] And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
[03:05.82] He'd grown up just like me
[03:09.08] My boy was just like me
[03:13.04] And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
[03:16.98] Little boy blue and the man in the moon
[03:19.81] "When you comin' home, son?
[03:21.94] "I don't know when
[03:22.93] But we'll get together then, Dad
[03:26.11] We're gonna have a good time then"
[03:27.78]
