Life Changes - Commentary Lyrics

[00:00.14] You're listening to the Thomas Rhett Life Changes album release special
[00:04.02] I'm talking to Thomas Rhett all about the album
[00:06.07] And we have come to one of my absolute favorite songs on your album
[00:10.61] I cannot stop listening to this song, it is the title track
[00:13.63] It's Life Changes and there's such a great groove to it, but the lyrics are so perfect
[00:20.62] And I mean, I would like to believe that you just sort of sat down
[00:24.03] And very effortlessly scribbled this out
[00:26.31] And yet, I find sometimes the songs that sound the simplest, you maybe had to work a little harder
[00:31.14] So, I'm curious how simple was this song? (Yeah)
[00:32.88] Because I mean, it is literally your life in three minutes
[00:35.50] Yeah, this song was tough because there were more moments like that
[00:39.18] That you have to kind of put them all on paper and be like
[00:41.18] Well, these 20 things I felt like shaped who I am today over the last five years
[00:46.25] And so we picked three of those and wrote three different verses about them
[00:49.24] That I thought were the most just life-changing moments
[00:52.39] That really I felt like one thing led to another thing and ultimately led me here
[00:55.44] So, it's a tough song to write because when you talk about certain things of like
[00:59.51] I had no idea what I wanted to do in college and then
[01:02.19] You know, thank God he smacked me in the face and said, you're going to write songs
[01:05.05] And then everyone told me, he's like, dude, you're 22, please don't get married yet
[01:09.02] I remember that
[01:10.12] Not in a malicious way
[01:11.24] Just dude, your career is just starting
[01:13.18] Like why?
[01:14.04] Why would you do that now?
[01:15.18] And you're so young
[01:16.24] If you love her now, you'll love her when it's a better time (exactly)
[01:18.54] But I just, it was just in my gut
[01:20.09] It was like, this needs to happen now
[01:21.79] And it did, and it completely altered my life forever
[01:24.75] And then, you know, going on and kind of in the back of our minds
[01:29.04] Thinking that there was something wrong with one of us because that we couldn't have children
[01:32.01] And so then, you know, learning that, okay, well, maybe we were supposed to adopt
[01:36.93] And that's maybe all of our children are supposed to be adopted children
[01:39.86] And so we adopted Willa and halfway through that Lauren got pregnant
[01:43.15] And so like, it's just so many crazy things that we kind of just followed our gut and tried to do
[01:47.35] I guess what was the right thing in that moment
[01:49.60] And it, you know, it led us to where we are now
[01:51.06] So, definitely one of my favorite songs to write
[01:53.70] And definitely probably the most personal song that I have allowed people to listen to
[01:58.39] And it is so infectious and such an earworm
[02:00.46] I mean, I could, you know, recite the lines after the first time I heard it
[02:04.28] And now I, one of my favorite lines in there, where you say
[02:08.07] She, Lauren now has her own fans and she's got a little blue check by her Instagram
[02:12.42] Which, which was just so clever to me
[02:14.51] I'm-, one thing that it made me think about is
[02:16.87] Talk to me a minute about how gracefully she has managed your celebrity
[02:22.16] And coming into her own celebrity because I mean
[02:24.74] She seems still as one of the most unaffected, genuine, sweet people that is just taking it as it comes
[02:31.36] Yeah, I think every time I say this, it comes across weird
[02:33.91] But I think one of the best things about Lauren is that she truly doesn't get affected by much
[02:37.66] Fame, she could care less about
[02:40.18] Money she could care less about
[02:41.36] Meeting famous people she could care less about
[02:43.45] She's such a normal person
[02:44.93] And I think in the back of her mind, she knows that everyone else is a normal person
[02:47.84] Somewhere deep down inside
[02:49.50] And so I think that the way that how she's handled all this stuff is because she truly is just like
[02:54.78] Well, this is what's happening
[02:55.84] You know?
[02:56.59] And she just takes it as it comes
[02:57.93] And I'm the opposite
[02:59.88] Like, if there is a moment to freak out in a situation, I will freak out
[03:04.31] If something is not going how I thought it was gonna go, I'm immediately like, what did I do wrong?
[03:09.66] Lauren's like, babe, it's fine, like don't worry about it
[03:12.55] Just go do the thing
[03:13.76] The show's going to be fine
[03:14.82] Everything's going to be fine
[03:16.35] And so, the Lord knew that I needed somebody like that in my life
[03:18.43] Because I don't know where I would be without her
[03:21.32] But it's just amazing that her just being her
[03:23.34] I think is what people just love about her, is that never wears makeup
[03:27.10] I mean, she's always just like first thing in the morning, like, today we're eating Cheerios
[03:32.00] You know like that kind of thing
[03:33.21] And so I think people really just know how to relate to Lauren, so
[03:36.32] Yeah, I love the song
[03:37.53] I love the lyrics
[03:38.89] And I love that it is the title track because it can be taken in so many different ways
[03:43.18] Life changes as a noun or life changes as a verb (yeah)
[03:46.47] And I encourage people to get to know these lyrics
[03:49.25] Because you're going to be hearing this song, "I Have a Feeling" on the radio more than just right now
[03:53.70] Absolutely
[03:54.43]
